Thanks for sharing this! Having the guts to approach Mr. Halili and the humility to accept mentoring is exceptional! One of the many signs I’ve seen in you which indicate that you’ll go places and you’ll be a good mentor yourself. =)

I can just imagine who this person is, and I can just imagine what potentials your relationship with him can bring (both ways).

Remember this is as much a learning process for the mentor also.. It reminds me of the homily of Fr. Roque Ferriols during the wake of Richie Fernando, wherein he described how he came to know Richie. He said (translated from Filipino): I came to know Richie as a student in my Philosopy class, in the quizes, exams, and recitations, and during spiritual direction, wherein I as the director listen to the directee. It is less of me providing direction, but simply mirroring back to him the wisdom of God that he shows to me..

It’s been very rewarding taking that step forward.
One of the most important lessons I learned in this experience is this: “Ask”.

I’m already preparing for our next meeting by taking notes on things I want to ask him ;-) .

After re-reading this, I am blown away again with joy that your follow-through action from our workshop yielded such high quality results in so short a time! Don’t lose sight of the fact that you were blessed to have had that opportunity with Mr Halili. He, I’m sure, felt very good that he was sought after as a mentor. Leaders like him need self-validation just like you and me and being sought after as a mentor is huge. What you did very well was to be prepared with critical questions and more. The questions focussed the conversation and showed commitment and capacity on your part, not to mention the effect on maximizing Mr Halili’s time.I’m sure this did not escape his attention. Continue being the kind of “mentee” a mentor would enjoy mentoring—enthusiastic to learn, dilligent in preparation and mindful of time utilization. Congratulations again Edwin and take care.
