I was at a wedding last weekend. I was enjoying the celebration, laughing along with the messages, some funny, all heartfelt.

Suddenly, I found myself in front of the crowd beside the newly wedded couple. The groom gave ME a message. I was caught by surprise by the message! With a smile, I just greeted the couple best wishes on their wedding day.

If not for the message that took me by surprise, I think I could have mustered saying something at least a bit witty.

Up to an hour or two after that event, I was thinking about the event and what I COULD have said, most of them witty but with a relevant message. I kept telling myself I SHOULD have said this or SHOULD have said that.

But hey, we learn. That’s in the past. And when I find myself in a similar situation, I will be ready with a trigger mechanism that will put me in the frame of mind to speak confidently when I am asked or expected to give a message.

My trigger message is: “Well, what can I say?”

This is actually a trigger to myself – to my sub-conscious. This question is actually a way for me to catch up with what’s happening, to give me a few moments, and most importantly, to tell myself “I better say something soon.” :-) It will be what it will be, whether it’s witty, or with a relevant message.

“Well, what can I say?”

“Thank you”
“It’s an honor”
“A pleasure”
“All the best”
And, my favorite specifically for the situation I was in last saturday, “I have every intention!” :-)

and many other things I could say in situations like that. I’ll use that trigger.

This hits me closer to home.

I’ve found very inspiring readings and audiobooks from International speakers like Jack Canfield, T Harv Eker, Anthony Robbins, Steve Pavlina.

p.s. barely 15 hours after I posted this article, a search for “Lloyd Luna” on Google puts Purposeful Penguin on the front page results. Hmmm…. I see Purposeful Penguin is SEO’d quite well. Ayos!

Interview with Jack Canfield’s associates, that is :-)

I subscribed to Jack Canfield’s newsletter when I started listening to his <a href="http://www.jackcanfield.com/page/?PageID=61" title="Jack Canfield's "The Success Principles"">Audio book “The Success Principles”.

In the newsletter two weeks ago, Jack announced the pilot of their coaching program. I thought to myself, “It’s going to be expensive”. But taking from one of Jack’s tips in the Success Principles, I said: “Oh what the heck, go for it anyway!”

I signed up for an interview and got a call from Jack’s staff the very next day. A few days later, I was interviewed by one of Jack’s 10 or so coaches. It was a process of finding out whether there was a match between where I am, where I wanted to be and whether they found a good match between what I needed and what coaching they could provide.

There were some questions I answered before-hand:

Canfield Homework Questions

1. Where are you now? (This question is referring to what you have done so far on accomplishing or starting your goals)
2. Where do you want to be? (This is where you want to get specific with time, amounts and details of what you want to accomplish)
3. What is holding you back? ( This is referring to either internal or external circumstances you feel may be holding you back from your goals)
4. How could a coach help you? ( What kind of support are you looking for from a coach)
5. Why now? (Why work on these goals now, why not wait longer?)

My interview took around an hour. It was a very pleasant interview. I clarified with my interviewer, Josiah, the method of coaching, what it will entail from my part, what I can expect.
I also clarified my decision criteria and the challenges I’m facing with regards to the tuition fee. I knew there was a tuition fee in terms of time, energy and of course money. I had a pre-determined monetary “tuition fee” that I was willing to invest in a coaching program.
The fee, it turned out, was US$2,099 for a six month coaching program. Payment terms would apply.

The 6-month coaching program included a 5-week formal phase with half-hour sessions once a week with my coach. I have unlimited call and email access to my coach as well as other coaches. There’s also a Monthly Success Report.

The feature of this coaching program that I liked the most was the Warranty of Success ! This means that the coaching program will not “release” me or let me alone unless and until I succeed in the goals I set out to achieve in the 6-month program. Even if it takes me more than six-months to achieve the goals, the Warranty gave me access to my coach until I achieved my goals and at no additional monetary cost to me.

That was a big promise, the Warranty of Success. That’s the most attractive to me considering that it is the fear of success that was (I’m creating here … *was*) holding me back.

Nevertheless, I had made my criteria clear to myself and the monetary tuition fee is currently out of my range. I will be getting my coaching in different ways and will put Jack Canfield’s coaching program in my bin items for now.

I did gain much from the 2 hours I discussed with Jack’s staff and coaches during the screening. During those interviews, I articulated clearly where I am now, where I want to go, what’s holding me back, and why I want to soar! :-) . It gave me more clarity with what I want to achieve.

It was a good opportunity having that Interview with Jack Canfield’s staff and coaches. I’ll be meeting you again another time in the future, Josiah, Karen and Jen!

Cheers!

Edwin

Edwin’s Purpose in Life!
To Help More, Thus Be More

Help More

As a child, I had the dream of saving my mother from a catastrophe. Specifically, I dreamed of carrying my mother in my arms, rescuing her from a burning house.

Helping other people has been in my heart since childhood.

I am not sure where this value came from. Possibly from being rescued by a carpenter from a dog that bit me in the face when I was 5 years old.

I remember being swiftly carried by the carpenter away from the dog. The carpenter brought me to my loving mother’s arms. My mother rushed me to my father at the hospital who then cleaned my wounded face and sutured my torn eyelid.

In my adulthood, I have translated this dream of saving my mother to “saving the world”, or in a more practical sense, to helping others.

Help others. Very basic, very pure.

I want to help others.
I want to help more.
I want to help more people.
I want to help in more ways.

Be More

From my grand images in my childhood and adolescence, I’ve carried into adulthood much of my ideals of helping others.

But now I am more balanced, acknowledging that to help others, I need to be a better person, to develop myself more. To be more!

This acknowledgement came late (just a few months ago).

Through the years, I have falsely perceived self-development as a selfish desire. This made me limit my self-development even as I KNOW that there is so much that I can grow into, to develop into.

Today, I commit to myself, to the world and to our higher being that I am my best gift to the universe!

To help more, I want to BE more!

What IS being more?

Being more is developing myself to be the best person I can be for the roles I choose in my life.

Being more means being a great son, a great sibling, a great tito/ninong, a great husband, a great father.

Being more means being a great friend, a great colleague, a great student, a great teacher, a great person.

When I Help other people, I become more. Become more whole, become more human, become a part of that person I’ve helped. As I help other people, I become more and leave a positive impact on other people.

What is the best possible life?

I look back into a reflection from my adolescence in college.

My measure of a great life is how, upon my death, people would remember me as a great man.

It may be morbid, but I feel that a person’s contribution to this world is best measured by what he leaves behind upon his death.

What shall I leave when I die?

A wonderful loving wife who always felt my love throughout our lives together and who shall have a great many happy memories to cherish for the rest of her life

Proud parents and siblings rejoicing in how their son/brother has loved them dearly

Great children who have mastered this game called life from a father, a friend, a mentor

Grateful family and friends who will forever carry with them the positive impact I made in their lives

A legacy of life lessons that will benefit other people long after I move on to my next life

What shall I do TODAY to live this purpose in my life?

I start by praising GOD for the wonderful gift he has given me: my life!

I commit myself to learning, reflection and self-development

I commit myself to sharing my life to make a positive impact on people I am blessed to have moments with in this lifetime

Edwin’s Purpose in Life is
To Help More, Thus Be More

Principle 1.
Principle 2. Your rewards, both tangible and intangible, will always be equal to the value of your service to other people. The more you put in, the more you get out. Through the Law of Sowing and Reaping, time management allows you to sow more and better, and therefore to reap more and better in every area of your life. If you want to increase the quality and quantity of your rewards, you need only seek ways to increase the value of your service. This is very much under your control.

Principle 3. Good time management requires that you see yourself as a ‘‘factory.’’ A factory has three phases of production. First of all, it has inputs of raw materials, time, labor, money, and resources. These are the ‘‘factors of production’’ that are necessary to create the end-product.

Second, inside the factory there are activities that take place. These are the production activities or work that are necessary to produce the product or service. The efficiency of operations within the factory determines the productivity of the factory and the productivity of each person involved in the production process.

Third, what emerges from the factory are the outputs or production of the factory. The value of the factory is determined by the quality and quantity of its outputs relative to its inputs. The central purpose of the management of the factory is to increase the quality and quantity of outputs.

One main difference between highly effective people and people who seem to produce very little is that top performers always focus on outputs or results. Average performers focus on inputs. Top performers focus on accomplishments; medium or low performers focus on activities.

Good time management requires that you continually ask yourself: What outputs are expected of me? What am I expected to produce? Why, exactly, am I on the payroll?

The more you focus on the required outputs of your position, the better and more effective you will become. As a result, you will create greater value and make a more important contribution. You will become more productive and, therefore, more valuable to yourself and to your company.

Principle 4. Everything you accomplish, or fail to accomplish, depends on your ability to use your time to its best advantage. Your levels of achievement and performance, in every area, are determined by your ability to think through and to apply the very best time management techniques available to you. You can only increase the quality and quantity of your results by increasing your ability to use your time effectively.

Principle 5. Time is the scarcest resource of accomplishment. In America today, the biggest problem most people have is ‘‘time poverty.’’ People may have money and material success, but they don’t have enough time to enjoy them. We are short of time in almost every area of our lives.

Time is inelastic; it cannot be stretched. Time is indispensable; all work and accomplishment requires it. Time is irreplaceable; there is no substitute for it. And time is perishable; it cannot be saved, preserved, or stored. Once it is gone, it is gone forever.

Principle 6. The practice of time management skills allows you to develop judgment, foresight, self-reliance, and self-discipline. These are the qualities of leadership and character. It is time management that enables you to get things done, and your ability to accomplish the tasks that are assigned to you is the chief measure of your value to your company, and to your world.

Principle 7. A focus on time management forces you to be intensely results-oriented. Results orientation is the key quality of successful men and women. Your ability to focus single-mindedly on the most important results required of you is the fastest and surest way to get paid more, promoted faster, and to eventually achieve financial independence.

Principle 8. Time management enables you to work smarter, not just harder. Many people who are failures actually work harder than successful people. But they produce less in the hours they work because of poor personal and time management skills.

Principle 9. Good time management is a source of energy, enthusiasm, and a positive mental attitude. The more productive you become, the more positive you feel about yourself. As you see yourself accomplishing large quantities of work, you actually experience a continuous inflow of additional energy that enables you to accomplish even more.

Principle 10. You grow as a person in direct proportion to the demands that you place on yourself. The self-discipline of time management builds character, confidence, and an unshakable belief in yourself and your abilities.

Principle 11. Lasting motivation only comes from a feeling of achievement and accomplishment. The more you get done, the better you feel about yourself, and the more eager you become to do even more.

Principle 12. Now, this minute, is all the time you have. If you manage yourself minute by minute, the hours and days will take care of themselves. The more tightly you manage your time, the more you are guaranteed that it will translate into a great life that’s hallmarked by purpose, power, control, and worthwhile accomplishments.

Happy New Year!

This is going to be a growth year for Ka Edong, Technobiography, eOFW and Purposeful Penguin!

I’ll be investing more time and energy into writing more informative and useful articles in Technobiography and in other blogs especially eOFW.net and Purposeful Penguin.

In fact, I have a goal of publishing at least one article per day on eOFW.net .

The guiding principle here is that the more value we give out, the more value we receive in return. We want to impart value to our readers.

We will be more creative in finding and publishing more useful information. We will find out what our readers want and need, and answer more specific questions.

Aside from eOFW.net, I will also be blogging more reflective articles on Purposeful Penguin. I’ll find a balance between casual articles and reflective, well-polished articles which I envision to compile when there are enough articles to share in paper format. O ha! :-)

Here’s to a happy, abundant and purposeful 2008 to me, to you and our families!

Pasko 2007

Dearest friends,

How are you? Hope all is well with you and your family this Christmas season. Allow me to share a couple of stories and gifts I have for you this Christmas.

2007 for me was a year of travel, family, friends and self-discovery.

Top FIVE highlights of my year:

First, I had an opportunity to travel to the US and Canada for business and pleasure. The trip was so wonderful visiting family and friends, discovering places, getting high on joy rides and just sharing stories and spending time with loved ones!

Second highlight was a dream vacation in Chicago & Florida. It was an all-expense-paid trip with family and friends. Imagine!?!? The theme parks were awesome, stories and bloopers were hilarious and experiencing it all with family and friends made it such a wonderful dream come true.

Third, I conquered my marathon at Singapore this December. I set my mind to it, I trained, I got hurt, I got up, I beat the odds, I run the distance and I conquered myself! I got a lot of help from myself and from my loved ones too. Celebrate! Wahoooo!

Fourth, :D … ask me! edwin.soriano@gmail.com

Fifth and my biggest discovery: Edwin. I see my face in the mirror and I couldn’t recognize myself compared to a year ago. I am sunrise! I am blooming! It’s a wonderful life! And I want more from life, so much more!

As I end this milestone year, let me share five nuggets that have helped me grow so much this year.

“Every adversity carries with it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit.” – Napoleon Hill

People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime.
When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person.

“All that we are is a result of what we have thought” – Buddha

When the intention is clear, the mechanism appears.

We are responsible for the results we create in our life!
There are many more Christmas gifts I want to share with you. Please visit http://purposeful.edongskey.com/lists/gifts-2007/.

I thank the Good Lord and celebrate all the blessings of 2007: travel, family, friends and self.
In 2008 may you choose to have happiness and abundance for you and your family!

Have a Blessed Christmas! Maligayang Pasko!
